Baby's first blog

Just got a chance to login for the first time. It's been an insane week of training and running a train-the-trainer class. Have you ever noticed that trainers are way harder to train than nice easy sheep like students?

That's what they kinda said about me when I started my job last year as a trainer - that I asked so many questions that were most likely unnecessary because the students wouldn't think of asking those questions!!!!!
But hey, as a trainer you gotta do some C.Y.A. if you know what that stands for!

Having been a trainer myself, for numerous years, I can agree & empathize with that.

I tell people that I would make a terrible typical student. Even though I teach, I don't care to sit through a typical classroom course. I'm the type of learner who prefers to read a manual, sit in front of a computer and try it out myself. I don't need my teacher to guide me. I need him / her mainly as a knowledge resource in case I have a problem.

Oh, and not to degrade technical course teachers (since I am one, myself) but I stopped counting how often I knew more than the instructor!

I think when you're in the field, mastering your science/honing your craft, you tend to be more critical of other trainers/educators. I have been in a class where I simply could not understand how this person came to be the instructor. No teaching/facilitation ability whatsoever. The problem is some people do not understand that there is a difference between knowing a subject and being able to facilitate the process of learning that subject.
