My thoughts on Vlogging - Blogging etc.

I am really completely on the fence with my feelings regarding blogs and vlogs. As much as the freedom of information and ability to self publish is a great and noble idea it hardly ever works that way. The Blog/Vlog world is filled with personal opinions, rants, innacuracies and yet at the same time there is plenty of accurate, intelligent and thought provoking information available.

As I was reading I was thinking about how this specifically relates to learning and education and this is another area on which I cannot make up my mind. As I see it there are a number of negatives. Specifically, with so much information available, how does a learner weed out the massive amount of inaccurate information? It could become overwhelming and leave people unable or unwilling to even think for themselves. Whatever they're told would become fact until the next new truth popped up.

I do however see a potential positive which probably will not be proven or disproven until the current generation, the younger students who grow up with this type of information and knowledge available to them, become adults. It could also force those under the onslaught of so much info to become extremely critical and creative thinkers. Thus forcing them to be aware of their own opinions and belief systems at a much earlier age than people of my generation. When I was in school what the teacher taught and/or personally believed or what was in a book were the only facts available to us. If we put down our own personal opinion, on a history test for example, we were just plain wrong, no matter how valide our arguments might have been. However with this new tech everybody has the ability to become an expert and to really develop their thinking and this I think may be a positive that more than compensates for the negatives.

FYI, I'm not sure if we're supposed to post to the forum or to our Blog so I'm posting in both places.

I would be surprised if vlogs become very mainstream. The technology is in the hands of many - such as video phones and of course digital cameras with video capability - but the editing is time consuming.
Of course it depends on the quality of vlog the creator wants to put out as well. But I believe as consumers we will not continue to access poor quality vlogs after we visit someone's site and view their first few vlogs.

I partially disagree with Kasandra. I do agree that the general trend is to boost wireless technology and to make the mobile industry the mainstream. However, perhaps because cell phones, IPods, and all those hand-held gadgets are so small, it will make things difficult to display and make this practical to view. Suffice to say that the desktop and laptop won't disappear. If anything, video will find greater use on the desktop.

As for editing - ah yes, the nature of all media is that it is so memory intensive and it does require a lot of work. But, I think video has far more power than words, because it breaks a lot of language barriers. (Culture barriers, though, are a different story.) So, to make vlogging more practical, editing will have to be made easier and quicker.

"If anything, video will find greater use on the desktop"
There is a new technology that might suggest otherwise right now - verizon has a new vcast phone which they are promoting. The new phone allows you to watch TV if you can imagine that!!!!!!!!!!
Now, remember, this is a phone so it is tiny compared to a typical TV screen, so this new technology suggests to me that video will increasingly be less limited to the desktop.

I personally am not interested in using that small a screen so I won't be one of the adopters, but I am also neither interested in text messaging or video cameras or anything beyond making a basic phone call, and there are millions who feel the opposite to me. They want to be in touch with all the latest content. And they might just be willing to sacrifice screen size for up to the minute content.
